Congress Chairman, Adelino Leite Moreira, FMUP, SPF

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we hosted the 3rd International Meeting of the Portuguese Society of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. This program, took place on the 7th and 8th of November 2024, offered once again a high quality programme with an excell panel of speakers. Physiology is a cross-cutting discipline, fundamental to the training and practice of professionals in the various areas of human and animal health, sport, biology, bioengineering and biomedical engineering, among others. This meeting was therefore a privileged moment for people with different backgrounds and interests to meet and exchange ideas. Here they found a unique opportunity to consolidate their scientific, pedagogical and professional training, as well as to build and consolidate networks.

SPF Awards New!

Awards will be presented to the winner or their representative, who must be present at the closing session. In their absence, the award will be presented to the next ranked nominee.

TRAVEL AWARDS

To encourage young scientists to share their latest research within the physiology community. Each award (four) will provide 300.00€ (euro) for young scientists traveling from Portugal, outside the Porto district, or from any other country within Europe.

PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY AWARD for INNOVATIVE RESEARCH

To celebrate innovation and to recognize ideas with power to change health research. This award also involves a special discount for a manuscript publication in a Q1 physiological journal to accelerate ideas and solutions in the field.

MDPI LIFE AWARD

To differentiate the outstanding research work presented in poster and developed by early-career researchers. This award distinguishes the best communicated high level science and also involves a special discount for a manuscript publication in a Q1 physiological journal.

ADVANCED SEMINARS 3rd International Meeting of the Portuguese Physiological Society

Seminar 1 – Exercise and Aging – “VIVIFRAIL multicomponent exercise program”

Mikel Izquierdo, Professor and Director of the Department of Health Sciences at the Public University of Navarra (Spain). ORCID ID 0000-0002-1506-4272

If you fight frailty, if your focus is on Physical Activity physiology and/or health promotion in the elderly, you should learn more about Vivifrail.
The Vivifrail Seminar empowers professionals to manage elder frailty and prevent falls. It emphasizes physical activity’s role in maintaining and enhancing functionality and life quality. The course provides strategies for personalized interventions to combat inactivity, reducing disability and dependence risks in an aging population. Participants will learn practical application of the Vivifrail physical training program to delay disability and boost seniors’ cognitive and emotional health. SIGN UP [+ here] New!, applications are limited.

professor doutor hugo alexandre ferreira    Seminar 2 – Brain vs. Machine – “Brain-Computer Interfaces hands-on”

Hugo Alexandre Ferreira, Professor, Scientist and Entrepreneur in MedTech, Digital Health, Ageing and Longevity. ORCID ID: 0000-0002-4323-3942

Dedicated to all of those wanting to develop their information in cutting-edge science. After a brief historical overview of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), advanced fundamentals and methods of operation will follow. We will also address practical applications and future trends. On this journey we will discover how such BCI devices are enabling us to gain insights into how we humans learn, inspiring us to build improved AI algorithms, and promoting better “personal relationships” with machines.
A practical hands-on demo will conclude the seminar. SIGN UP [+ here] New!, applications are limited.

Seminar 3 – Physiology Education – “”Maximizing physiology student learning with high structure course design – hands-on streaming course”

Justin Shaffer, Educator and Teaching Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO (EUA). Website pessoal

Do you want to effectively engage your physiology students in and out of the classroom by using evidence-based teaching and course design practices? Do you want to improve student learning and give students ample opportunities to practice developing relevant skill sets? If so, then this workshop is for you! Dedicated to all of those innovative educators in Human Physiology
Attend to learn about how to implement high structure course design into physiology courses, leading to improved student learning and more engaging class lessons. SIGN UP [+ here] New!, applications are limited.
